Elena Barrios was born in Iloilo City, Philippines, in 1936, the daughter of a Spanish-Filipino textile merchant and a schoolteacher. From a young age, she had a natural warmth and eloquence that made her an exceptional communicator. After finishing her studies in English and hospitality management in Manila, she moved to Australia in the 1950s, one of the earliest waves of Southeast Asian migrants drawn by the promise of work and stability.

She met Jonathan Guggi Hewson during a regional tourism conference in Brisbane, where she was working as a liaison officer for visiting ASEAN representatives. Their connection was immediate—both visionaries, both idealists in different ways. Elena married Jonathan in 1960 and became not just a partner in life, but also in business. She played a key role in softening and humanizing the brand of Hewson Enterprise—ensuring their hospitality model respected local cultures, hired inclusively, and remained accessible to working families.

Elena was the architect behind many of Hewson Enterprise’s hospitality outreach initiatives—cultural immersion packages, bilingual staff training, and heritage-conservation-based accommodations. Though she never held a formal executive title, her voice was instrumental in company decisions and guest experience design.

As a mother, she was known to be gentle but firm. She raised Robert with the kind of quiet resilience inherited from generations of women who worked, taught, and led behind the scenes. Though now retired, Elena remains an honorary advisor to the board and is often seen tending to the heritage gardens of one of Hewson Enterprise’s oldest properties on the Sunshine Coast.
